SUMMARY:„Geomedia 2021 – Off the Grid“: The 4th International Geomedia Conference
DESCRIPTION:The phrase “off the grid” is commonly understood to refer to the voluntary decoupling from established infrastructure networks such as electricity\, water or gas supply. The implication is one of material independence and a self-sufficient lifestyle. Going “off the grid” means making yourself invisible by rebuking the social and technological structures that normally organize our lives. It is entering\, or returning to\, uncharted territory. The grid from which you disappear is often imagined like a web that we are woven into\, at once providing security – of cultural connectivity\, opportunities to work\, or societal participation – while also limiting individual\, political or technological agency. \nThe grid also speaks to the geographic coordinate system\, an all-encompassing global structure which makes it possible to accurately locate any point on earth. This unified grid represents a dominant ordering principle for everything “locatable”. It is part of the technological infrastructure of many platforms\, services and applications which fall under the definition of geomedia\, most prominently the Global Positioning System (GPS). In this regard\, “off the grid” is a move away from such Cartesian notions of space towards a situated relational account of (quotidian) practices carried out with\, through\, or in relation to\, geomedia. \nGoing off the grid has also been seen as a form of renunciation of the conveniences of the late capitalist (media) world in order to lead a supposedly slower\, less stressful and eventually less superficial life – as inspired by the transcendentalism of the likes of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. But with so many people relying on the grid for purposes of work and entertainment in recent times\, what does this mean for our relation to geomedia? What does going off the grid look like now? This presupposes\, of course\, that there is ipso facto a grid – an infrastructure – which one can connect to freely at any time. But a great number of people do not get to choose to decouple from the grid – a fact that speaks to questions of access to the socio-material infrastructures underpinning geomedia and associated communities and practices. \nArguably\, practices of surveillance and countersurveillance concern the implicit or even involuntary participation in corresponding infrastructures. Here\, optimization for a range of tasks and activities routinely involves a certain kind of surveillance; a default setting in the running of all kinds of media platforms used for navigation\, video streaming or online gaming. In this\, surveillance is wrapped up with profit-seeking practices\, and the extraction of value from the ‘data fumes’ of platform users\, who enter a form of “cooperation without consensus” as they stream movies\, hire taxis\, host videoconferences\, ride public transport\, or go on dates. In these various iterations\, surveillance might look different\, and/or be practiced in distinct ways to traditional forms of state or corporate surveillance\, increasingly dependent on technological protocols and standards that not only underpin the grid but also govern our use of geomedia. One consequence is that the relation between private and public spheres is transformed\, and introduces new questions of governance\, exploitation and marginalization. It is of crucial importance\, who is online\, and who is offline might as well not exist. Yet these optimization processes are also subject to countermeasures that constitute new modes of existence – from anonymous accounts and the use of VPNs\, to location spoofing\, and other tricks and techniques to hide\, erase\, or obfuscate user activity and location. \nYet the grid is not all-encompassing\, nor all-powerful. Whilst countersurveillance efforts resist\, fight back and oppose\, alternative geomedia projects imagine the grid differently – sometimes even plotting its demise. From community broadband initiatives\, to independent media organizations\, post-capitalist streaming platforms\, and citizen science projects; there is a continued\, concerted effort to build alternatives to state-based\, or company-owned geomedia\, operating at various scales from the hyperlocal to the global. Through these efforts\, organizers and participants question the foundations of our collective social and technological infrastructures\, redefining what it is to care\, share\, distribute\, cultivate or reallocate funds\, resources\, opportunities and ideas – bringing new geomedia\, and new imaginaries of hope (or perhaps fear)\, into existence. \n  \nKeynote Speakers: \nCaren Kaplan – University of California at Davis\, USA\nNanna Verhoeff – Utrecht University\, Netherlands \n  \nSuggested paper topics include\, but are not limited to: \nPolitics\, philosophy and ethics of going off grid\nGrid as Network\, Grid as Default (Geomedia and Infrastructure)\nPhysical Geography/Relational Geography\nInhabiting Digital Geographies (VR\, hybrid spaces)\nGeomedia in the Global South\nUrban and Rural Geomedia\nThe ‘geo’ in Geomedia\, the ‘media’ in Geomedia\nGoverning Geomedia (smart city\, sensor media\, infrastructures\, surveillance & countersurveillance)\nGeomedia Activism\nDigital detox\, rationing\, quarantine and isolation\nGeomedia Histories \n  \nGeomedia 2021 welcomes proposals for individual papers as well as thematic panels in English. \nIndividual paper proposals: The author submits an abstract of 200–250 words. SUMMARY:Interrogating Data Practices Lecture Series: Practices of Futuring: Reckoning with Climate Data (Hannah Knox)
DESCRIPTION:In this talk I turn attention to the ‚data practice‘ of predictive analytics\, to explore how predictive climate models work to demarcate futures and with what effects. A crucial aspect of the allure of contemporary data is its capacity to create a picture of the future – whether of the economy\, consumption behaviour or the climate. But the future that modelled predictions generate are not straightforward. Located in computational networks\, such futures are not simply the plans\, imaginaries or indeed practices of ideologues or engineers but the effects of an autopoetic unfolding from contingent material inputs that render traces of the present into plausible stories of what might happen. These futures are neither fictions nor realities\, but sit somewhere between the two\, describing what is to come whilst also undoing themselves in their injunction to change the present with a view to altering the trajectories that they imagine.  \nWhile anthropologists have developed a sophisticated vocabulary for talking about the past (tradition\, genealogy\, inheritance\, myth\, totem) and the present (culture\, relationality\, kinship\, exchange)\, we have a less developed set of conceptual resources for understanding the futures of predictive analytics\, or participating in the reimagination of their form. Our current methods (oral history\, archival research\, ethnography\, practice-focused research) are arguably ill-equipped to address the implications of futurities produced by computational models. How then might we gain a better handle on the futures that predictive analytics are generating? And how might this help us\, as critical scholars\, to participate more effectively in redirecting the now often apocalyptic trajectories revealed by data science?

DESCRIPTION:Smart Speaker finden sich inzwischen in vielen Haushalten und sind sowohl in den konkreten Umgang mit häuslicher Infrastruktur – Steuerung von Licht und Wärme – als auch in den Umgang mit anderen Medienangeboten – z.B. Musikstreaming und Online-Recherche – eingebunden. Dabei treten sie als Mittler von Datenpraktiken auf und sind selbst in die Aus- und Verwertung der Gebrauchsdaten eingebunden\, welche durch die Anbieter der Smart Speaker vollzogen wird. In unserem Vortrag wollen wir untersuchen\, wie Akteure ihren Umgang mit den Smart Speakern und damit ihre Datenpraktiken reflektieren; zugleich wollen wir die konkrete Interaktion mit gesprächsanalytischen Auswertungen von Audio- und Video-Aufzeichnungen diskutieren.

Die starke Hypothese\, dass Algorithmen selbst Handlungsfähigkeit besitzen\, wird mit einer relativierenden Hypothese komplementiert\, wonach sie diese nur im Kontext menschlicher Praxis erhalten. \nHilmar Schäfer ist Gastprofessor für Allgemeine Soziologie und Kultursoziologie am Institut für Sozialwissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und Mitglied des Vorstands der Sektion Kultursoziologie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie. Zu seinen Arbeitsschwerpunkten zählen soziologische Theorie\, Kultursoziologie und Soziologie des Bewertens. Er forscht gegenwärtig zu den institutionellen und alltäglichen Prozessen der Konstruktion und Bewertung von kulturellem Erbe mit einem Schwerpunkt auf der Auszeichnung als UNESCO-Welterbe sowie zu digitalen Praktiken.

SUMMARY:Interrogating Data Practices Lecture Series: Data Feminism (Catherine D’Ignazio)
DESCRIPTION:As data are increasingly mobilized in the service of governments and corporations\, their unequal conditions of production\, their asymmetrical methods of application\, and their unequal effects on both individuals and groups have become increasingly difficult for data scientists–and others who rely on data in their work–to ignore. But it is precisely this power that makes it worth asking: „Data science by whom? Data science for whom? Data science with whose interests in mind? These are some of the questions that emerge from what we call data feminism\, a way of thinking about data science and its communication that is informed by the past several decades of intersectional feminist activism and critical thought. Illustrating data feminism in action\, this talk will show how challenges to the male/female binary can help to challenge other hierarchical (and empirically wrong) classification systems; it will explain how an understanding of emotion can expand our ideas about effective data visualization; how the concept of invisible labor can expose the significant human efforts required by our automated systems; and why the data never\, ever “speak for themselves.” The goal of this talk\, as with the project of data feminism\, is to model how scholarship can be transformed into action: how feminist thinking can be operationalized in order to imagine more ethical and equitable data practices.

Eine Sittengeschichte des Erkennungsdienstes erschien in schwarzes Leinen gehüllt\, mit schwarzem Farbschnitt und in einem schwarzem Schuber. Das Buch dreht sich um die Geschichte und Gegenwart der Kriminalistik. Im Mittelpunkt der knapp tausendseitigen literarischen Montage steht die Vision des BKA-Chefs Horst Herold\, sein Entwurf einer EDV-gestützten Verbrechensbekämpfung\, deren „Datensammelwut“ Bürgerrechtlern der 1970er Jahre Albträume bescherte. Uwe Nettelbecks Fantômas. Eine Sittengeschichte des Erkennungsdienstes fällt trotz dieser Aktualität bis heute durchs Raster der Literaturgeschichte.

SUMMARY:Interrogating Data Practices Lecture Series: What do we know about what people think about data practices? (Helen Kennedy)
DESCRIPTION:Five years ago\, not much ‘bottom up’ empirical research into people’s thoughts\, feelings and experiences of datafication had been undertaken. But a lot has changed in a short time\, and recent years have seen a proliferation of surveys\, polls and qualitative research about such matters. Drawing on a comprehensive review of academic and grey literature on this topic\, I will comment on some emergent themes and identify future directions for research in this area. These include: the affective dimensions of living data; whether more trust in datafication should be the goal; ideas about fairness; the importance of social inequalities and their absence in much of this research; and how the way that research is undertaken shapes what is found.

SUMMARY:Interrogating Data Practices Lecture Series: Whose Data is it? Ownership of Research Data and Agency in Community-Based Participatory Research (Martin Dickel)
DESCRIPTION:Im Vortrag stehen Positionalisierungen von wissenschaftlich Forschenden und Co-Forschenden aus einer Schweizer Gemeinde im Zentrum\, die sich gemeinsam der Erforschung und Entwicklung eines Caring Community-Modells für die Gemeinde widmen. Caring Communities werden verstanden als innovatives Versorgungsmodell\, das Sorgearbeit gerechter verteilt und ins Zentrum der Gesellschaft rückt (Klie 2016). Wir verbinden das Konzept der Caring Communities mit dem Ansatz des Living Labs. Letztere schaffen eine Lern- und Explorationsumgebung\, die Gestaltung und Evaluation digitaler Lösungen nicht nur für Menschen\, sondern mit Menschen entwickelt (Ogonowski\, Jakobi\, Müller\, & Hess\, 2018). Partizipative Entwicklung (Co-Design) und Testen im und am Alltag (statt nur im Labor) sind zentrale Elemente. Es machten sich im Projektverlauf Teams in ganz unterschiedlicher Konstellation und auf unterschiedlichen Stufen der Beteiligung (Wright\, Bock & von Unger 2007) auf den Weg\, um der Idee einer «Sorgenden Gemeinschaft» Gestalt zu verleihen und mögliche Forschungsfragen und methodische Vorgehensweisen festzulegen sowie Kooperationsbündnisse zu etablieren. In der Schweizergemeinde O. hatte die gemeinsame Arbeit im Winter 2019/ 2020 an Fahrt aufgenommen und erfuhr mit dem Lockdown zunächst eine abrupte Vollbremsung – bevor sich Neues entwickelte. Im Vortrag hinterfragen wir\, wie sich Rollen und Beziehungen ‘im Feld’ verändern\, wenn plötzlich bestimmte Personengruppen pauschal für schutzbedürftig erklärt werden\, Kontakte nur noch über Medien möglich sind und sich alle im Ausnahmezustand befinden? Wir teilen hier in Form eines Werkstattberichts einige unserer Erfahrungen aus einem laufenden partizipativen Forschungsprojekt. Von Interesse ist insbesondere\, wie sich die Beziehungen zwischen Forschenden und Co-Forschenden durch die „ausserordentliche Lage“ im Kontext der Covid-19 Pandemie verändern und welche Auswirkungen dies auf die gemeinsame Arbeit in Datenerhebung und -auswertung zeigt.

SUMMARY:Interrogating Data Practices Lecture Series: A Feminist Medium is the Message in Three Parts (Sarah Sharma)
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Sharma is Director of the McLuhan Centre for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto and Associate Professor of Media Theory at the ICCIT/Faculty of Information. Her research and teaching focuses on the relationship between technology\, time and labour with a specific focus on issues related to gender\, race\, and class. She is the author of In the Meantime: Temporality and Cultural Politics (Duke UP\, 2014). Sarah is currently at work on two projects that take up McLuhan’s media theory for feminist ends. The first is a monograph tentatively titled Broken Machine Feminism which explores the relationship between technology and patriarchal cultures of exit. This project argues for the necessity of feminist techno-determinist stance in order to address contemporary power dynamics as they intersect with the technological. The second is an edited book collection\, „MsUnderstanding Media: A Feminist Medium is the Message“ (with Rianka Singh)\, which offers a feminist retrieval of McLuhan’s famous adage that the medium is the message.\n \nThis talk will outline Sarah’s work on a feminist approach to McLuhan and her argument for the new possibilities of a feminist techno-determinism.

In der Köln-Siegener Meisterklasse für Medienethnographie werden führende Vertreter*innen der visuellen Ethnologie ihre Arbeiten und Forschungsansätze vorstellen und mit den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern das je eigene Forschungsmaterial diskutieren. \n  \nÄNDERUNG: Meisterklasse „Visuelle Methoden II“:\nKamera-Ethnographie und visuelle Analytik \nOnline-Workshop mit Bina E. Mohn\, am 8. sowie am 15. und 16.10.2020 \nUnterstützung bei der Online-Durchführung: Pip Hare \n  \nMit dem Ziel einer zeigenden Ethnographie hat Bina E. Mohn in den letzten zwanzig Jahren mit der Kamera-Ethnographie ein eigenständiges Profil performativer Ethnographie entwickelt. Kamera-Ethnographie ist an Praktiken orientiert und beruht auf einer reflexiven Pragmatik des Sehens und Zeigens. Bei ihrer Weiterentwicklung – derzeit im Rahmen des SFB „Medien der Kooperation“ (Universität Siegen) – wird mit der Idee der „übersichtliche Darstellung“ (nach Wittgenstein) und ihrer Übertragung auf audiovisuelle Fragmente und deren Verknüpfung zu offenen Netzen experimentiert. Daraus erwächst ein arrangierender Erkenntnisstil mit dem Potential einer (audio-) visuellen Analytik\, die sich nicht allein in und an\, sondern insbesondere zwischen Bildern und Tönen sowie den Blicken des Publikums entfaltet. Dies wird im Rahmen des Workshops zur Diskussion gestellt und an eigenen Materialien ausprobiert. Ergänzend gibt Bina Mohn an Beispielen methodologische Impulse. \nDas Online-Format besteht in einem Wechsel zwischen synchronen Zusammenkünften via ZOOM und Arbeitsphasen\, die alleine oder in Kleingruppen vernetzt stattfinden. SUMMARY:Online lecture: "Ethics of mobile media fieldwork" with Erika Polson
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Erika Polson will discuss the ethical obligations that guide the immersed participant-observation role in ethnographic fieldwork on media-related topics. Although different countries and institutions have their own ethical review processes (e.g. the Institutional Review Boards in the US) that determine guidelines to be followed in designing and carrying out academic research\, Polson explores the more subtle\, individual and lived ways in which ethical issues appear and must be negotiated in the field. A continuing commitment to participants\, transparency\, respect\, and understanding of where vulnerabilities may lie can all lead to forms of ethical immersion that can further research rather than stifling it. In advance of this lecture\, the speaker recommends reading two articles. The first (Jun\, Li. 2008. Ethical Challenges in Participant Observation: A Reflection on Ethnographic Fieldwork. Qualitative Report\, 13\, 1: 100-115.) recounts ethical challenges in an ethnography of female gamblers. The second (Polson\, Erika. 2011. Belonging to the Network Society: Social Media and the Production of a New Global Middle Class\, Communication\, Culture & Critique 4: 144–163) is from Polson’s ethnography of expatriates in Paris and thinks through ethical approaches to „studying up“\, considering how vulnerabilities might still be discovered and respected.

DESCRIPTION:Ludic Locations – Spielerische Verortungen in transmedialen Kontexten \nWorkshop-Konzept\, Organisation: PD Dr. habil. Andreas Rauscher (Universität Siegen)\nGuest Lecturer: Hanns-Christian Schmidt (Universität Köln)  \nRäumliche Rahmensetzungen und Strukturen gehören zu den definierenden Elementen der Spielkultur – von den Grundplatten eines Lego-Baukastens\, des Spielbretts eines Gesellschaftsspiels über Spiel- und Sportplätze bis hin zur elaborierten Level-Architektur der Videospiele. Der Kopenhagener Spieleforscher Espen Aarseth bezeichnet den Raum sogar als raison d’ĕtre des Videospiels. Gemeinsam mit dem Medientheoretiker Stephan Günzel skizziert er in der Studie Ludotopia (2019) mit den Begriffen Space\, Place und Territory räumliche Alternativen zu traditionellen narrativen Modellen.  \nEin Ansatz\, der von Günzel und Aarseth dabei weniger beachtet wird\, ist der Herstellungsprozess dieser Räume – also die Frage danach\, wie Darstellungsräume zu Spielräumen werden\, welche ludischen Bauformen dabei eine besondere Wirkung entfalten und wie sich sowohl Game Designer als auch Fans bestimmte Bausteine aneignen können.  \nDenn wie man den spatial turn auch wendet\, ein besonderer Reiz an neueren analogen und digitalen Spielräumen besteht in der medienübergreifenden Integration von Gestaltungs- und Handlungselementen und der bewussten Vermischung und Modularisierung unterschiedlicher medienästhetischer Einflüsse: Videospiele verwandeln filmische Settings in eine Mise-en-Game. Brettspiele ludifizieren Szenarien aus literarischen und filmischen Welten\, von H.P. Lovecrafts kosmischem Grauen über die phantastischen Szenarien des Star Wars-Universums bis hin zu den Fantasy-Epen J.R.R. Tolkiens. Die erfolgreichen Escape Room-Spiele adaptieren Puzzles aus Videospiel-Adventures und übertragen sie\, erweitert um Motive des Thrillers\, auf reale Erlebnisräume. Mobile Games setzen die Schnitzeljagden um Pokémon und Co im urbanen Raum fort. Urban Games verwandeln öffentliche Räume in Spielplätze und umgekehrt modellieren stilprägende Game-Welten wie die Grand Theft Auto-Reihe (seit 1997) reale Städte detailverliebt und anspielungsreich im virtuellen Raum nach. Und während Editor Games wie Minecraft zur Konstruktion ganz eigener Welten einladen\, so werden die ‚typischen‘ Lego Games von Traveller’s Tales häufig zu Räumen spielerischer Dekonstruktion\, in denen die klischeehaften Gemeinplätze großer Unterhaltungsfranchises lustvoll parodiert werden. \nDer geplante Workshop untersucht die Mobilisierung der Spielräume und deren medienübergreifende Transferprozesse. Analog dem Film\, der schon seit längerem nicht mehr alleine auf der Leinwand im Kino stattfindet\, sprengen gegenwärtige Spielformen deren klassische Begrenzungen wie Spielplätze\, Spielbretter oder Sportfelder. Gleichzeitig scheinen bestimmte Spiellogiken den eröffneten Spielraum regelrecht zu überschreiben – ein typisches digitales Lego-Game entlarvt bestimmte Versatzstücke zwar\, präsentiert sich am Ende jedoch als Super-Struktur\, die kaum eine weitere spielerische Alternative mehr zulässt. Durch die Kombination mit anderen Kunst- und Kulturformen wie Kino\, Theater\, Literatur und bildender Kunst entstehen dadurch neue Konfigurationen und Konstellationen\, deren ästhetischer Mehrwert und ludische Architektur näher betrachtet werden soll.\nDie Bandbreite der möglichen Beispiele reicht vom Mobile Gaming und Urban Games über hybride Spielräume\, die auf die Bildsprache und Architektur anderer Medien verweisen\, bis hin zu umfassenden Online- und Rollenspielwelten.\nDie genauere Betrachtung der Bereiche Situationen\, Settings und Spielwelten soll nicht nur medienhistorische Perspektiven und methodische Fragen in den Blick nehmen\, insbesondere sollen gängige Raumkonzepte des Spiels auf ihre transmedialen Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten hin überprüft und aktualisiert werden.
